Reception contexts are about the response from the audience regarding a text. This could involve the popularity that a text receives or even if the text has caused controversy – it all links back to the audiences’ interpretations and perceptions of texts. The ideals of reader response criticism stem from the notion that the reader cannot be omitted from our understanding of literature and that readers are active participants in forming the meaning they find in literature. In discussing reception contexts – the Reader Response Criticism – it would be remiss of me not to talk about Fanfic or FanFiction. There could be no greater compliment – I would assume – to a writer than for your audience to be so engaged with your work that they desire to remain within the world you have created. Fanfic’s are literary works created by readers that ‘borrow the settings, plots, characters, and ideas from all forms of popular culture’ in order to create new texts, that build upon or enrich the original works.
